Rheintöchter

Following the successful completion of two theatrical scripts, Timann Krieg was commissioned by the Baden-Alsace Theatre group to develop a new work for their 2021 summer program.

“The writer Gunther loves Bruni. And the relationship seems perfect until they invite their friend Siegfried to join them on a shared Midsummer Night’s cruise on the “Gloria Rheni,” because he is currently inconsolable after his Hilde gave him the brush-off.

At the height of the celebration, Gunther suspects he has reason for jealousy and lament, for his Bruni seems to have eyes only for Siegfried. Gunther—no longer quite steady on his feet—wanders distraught onto the deck, accompanied by a bottle of Spätburgunder, and shortly thereafter finds himself in the water.

He drifts straight into the middle of the birthday festivities that King Rhine is celebrating together with his four beloved daughters. From afar they come: the dreamy Nebbia, the romantic Florestina, Noli, who made a career in a punk band in Rotterdam, and the elegant Draconia, who lives with her husband, the flamboyant financial speculator Hagen, in the fashionable Drachenfels near Königswinter.

It was a turbulent birthday, and a complex, irritating game of confusion, for the poet Gunther is fond of the fair daughters of the Rhine, and they do their best to enchant him with their charm and beauty. Yet behind the brilliant façades, another face is hidden— which is which, and whom can Gunther trust?

Finally, the King of the Rhine calls on him to make his choice among the beauties – and he had better choose well, for whatever he chooses will determine his fate.

A turbulent, entertaining piece that captivates with voluntary humour and at the same time raises serious questions”
